Science. Journalism. And all things in between.

Karthika Muthukumaraswamy is a media hound, technology geek and blogger based in Philadelphia. She writes about math, science, technology, new media, journalism, politics, and sports.

Karthika moved from a southern city in India to the United States in the fall of 2001 in search of greener pastures. She found them, literally, on the foothills of the Rockies, where she completed graduate studies in microbiology, and a thesis exploring ribonucleic acids in human cells from Colorado State University.

She then moved to Philadelphia and worked as a research specialist in the Department of Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania while reinforcing her lifelong passion for media and writing with a master’s degree in journalism from Temple University.

She now writes at, about and for the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and designs their social media platforms. In other words, she actually does everything she’s been writing about for years. She also writes for The Huffington Post, and is a regular contributor to the Online Journalism Blog.

When she’s not typing away at her computer, she’s probably running or biking on the Schuylkill trail, or working up a sweat at her neighborhood gym. She's quite positive that few things in life come close to the endorphin rush of mindless physical exertion - one of them is watching it in action.

She fervently believes wishes that the Eagles will one day lift the Lombardi trophy, and that Peyton Manning will have a second Superbowl ring. While she loves football to a level acceptable by society, her passion for tennis borders on obsession. She could – in a jiffy – break down the basics of a backhand slice, a topspin lob and an inside-out forehand. And you wouldn’t necessarily have to ask her. She has finally made peace with the fact that Pete Sampras and Roger Federer could both be the greatest of all time.

She’s the original foodie, and recently developed culinary skills to keep up with her fastidious palate. She strongly believes that a good cut of steak tastes best when it’s medium rare, and that that reddish-green oblong thing they sell in American supermarkets is not a mango. And that if lettuce is edible, you might as well eat grass.

She’s a self-proclaimed beer aficionado, and there’s no liquid she wouldn't pass up for a nice glass of LaChouffe’s straight from the tap.

Except, um, coffee.
Aaah, coffee. Without that caffeinated, soothing beverage, she couldn't have typed this, or for that matter, anything she's ever written.
